Chapter 303 Kindness and Might
Finished
The King initially intended to draft two decrees, but in the end, he only instructed Clark to draft the decree
conferring Ashley the title of imperial consort.
A consort was different from a concubine. It was a more prestigious status among the King’s concubines.
Therefore, the King also ordered the Imperial Astronomers to select an auspicious date immediately.
“Oliver, take the decree and followto Mystic Palace,” the King said.
“Yes!” Oliver replied. He had thought the King would immediately issue an order to arrest those involved, but he
didn’t. It was clear that he had considered it. Oliver couldn’t figure out why.
The King did not take a palanquin. Instead, he walked alongside Oliver and Clark.
Bringing Clark along was a sign that the King was still considering issuing an edict.
As night fell, the palace was indescribably quiet.
The King remained silent the entire way, his expression dark and unsettling.
Oliver and Clark did not dare to speak.
As they were about to reach Mystic Palace, the King suddenly asked Oliver, “What do you think should be done?”
Oliver hesitated for a moment before replying, “Rebels must be executed!”
“Killing is easy!” the King said, his tone laced with frustration, but he didn’t finish his thought.
After a brief pause, he added, “You are a man of the military, but ruling a nation is different from commanding an
army. The Queen Mother once said that killing is never the best solution.”
“Understood,” Oliver responded.
Upon arriving at Mystic Palace, Clark remained outside while the King took Oliver in. Naturally, this was because
Oliver was the one who had reported the matter, and he needed to inform the Queen Mother.
The Queen Mother was just about to have her meal. Seeing the King and Oliver arrive, she invited them to join
her.
However, the King had no appetite. He wanted to report the situation first.
Even so, the Queen Mother did not allow him to speak. “Meals cfirst, even for an King. Eat first, then
talk.”
“Yes,” the King had no choice but to agree.
The Queen Mother's meals were now quite simple-three dishes and a soup. Two were vegetarian, accompanied
by a perilla-roasted duck and a mushroom soup.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtA small bottle of wine was prepared for the meal. It was a grape wine brewed by the Queen Mother herself. It had
a deep red-purple hue. The King had tasted it before, but Oliver had not.
Taking a sip, he found the flavor light and subtle.

The Queen Mother asked, “How is it?”
Oliver answered honestly, “I'm not used to it. It doesn’t seem to taste like wine.”
“Drink more!”

Oliver took another big gulp. As the liquid flowed down his throat, it still had only a rich sweetness.
However, this time, there was finally a faint trace of alcohol left in his mouth.
“It has a bit of a wine taste, but it’s too sweet.”
The Queen Mother smiled. “Do you like it?”
Oliver shook his head. “I'm still not used to it.”
The Queen Mother waved her hand, ordering someone to bring a lighter wine. “If you don't like it, don’t force
yourself, no matter how good it is.”
“Yes!” Oliver sighed in relief. He really didn’t enjoy that drink.
The King, deep in thought, only ate a bowl of soup and didn’t touch his fork. The Queen Mother personally picked
up a piece of duck breast for him. “Try it. It's a famous local dish made by a chef from Wetinson.”
The King forced a smile. “Thank you, Mother.”
The dish was prepared by stuffing perilla leaves and roasted peanuts inside the duck’s belly, then slow- cooking
it until the flavors seeped into the meat. Finally, the rich juices were poured over the top, releasing an irresistible
aroma.
The King took a bite and said, “Delicious!”
But after that, he put down his fork and didn’t take a second bite.
The Queen Mother instructed Rowena to pour him another bow! of soup. Her gaze was calm as she said, “Finish
the soup.”
“Yes.” The King picked up the bowl and finished it all in one go. Suddenly, a surge of emotion overwhelmed him,
and he slammed the bowl onto the table. The bowl cracked and injured his palm, causing blood to gush out.
“Oh my god, Your Majesty, why do you do this to yourself?” Rowena gasped, immediately ordering someone to
fetch medicine.
Oliver quickly grasped the King’s hand, pressing the blood upward to slow its flow. “Please, Your Majesty, calm
your anger!”
The Queen Mother glanced over but remained indifferent, continuing her meal while letting the attendants
handle the commotion.
By the tshe finished eating, the King’s wound had been bandaged. Though no longes furious as before, he
remained silent.
Oliver dared not speak. His hands were stained with the King’s blood. Rowena handed him a cloth to wipe it off,
but a faint red mark still remained.

The Queen Mother wiped her mouth, washed her hands, and took a sip of water before finally looking up at the
King. “Does it not hurt?”
The King kept his head down. “I was momentarily overcwith anger.”
“What is the matter?” The Queen Mother stood up, ordered someone to remove the food, and moved to the
smaller hall to sit.
The King and Oliver followed her.
Silently, the Queen Mother listened as Oliver reported the situation. Then, she read the letters carefully, setting
them down with a quiet deliberation. She remained silent.
After a long silence, the Queen Mother finally looked up at the King. “What do you plan to do?”
The King looked at her. “What do you think, Mother?”
Queen Mother said, “You can’t do it or you don’t want to?”
“I... am conflicted!”
“Where does your conflict lie?”
“Among these people are capable ministers with outstanding achievements. Sare senior officials who served
since the late King’s reign, holding key positions with many disciples under them. Removing one could shake the
entire system. For now, there is no suitable replacement. | always believed they were loyal to the Royal Court
and to me. Such betrayal painsdeeply and fillswith rage.”
The Queen Mother asked, “So you can’t kill them, but keeping them makes you resentful?”
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm“Yes!” The King let out a heavy sigh. “Keeping them around painsto see, but if | have them killed, | fear the
court will fall into chaos for a time. | never expected that the ones who betrayedwould be the very people |
have always favored and trusted. | have treated them so well...”
“They are never satisfied. Now that they have power and your favor, they want even more, seeking profit where
they can. The Southern Watch and the Inspector High Court of Parliament will surely uncover everything. Once
exposed, their power will be gone. As for Zloimond, it's far away, and merely leaking information about
Argentum isn’t the sas plotting rebellion, yet it still brings them great wealth. Why wouldn't they do it?” The
Queen Mother spoke calmly, without a trace of anger.
“Mother, do you mean to forgive them?” The King asked.
“Tomorrow, you will claim illness and skip court. | will go instead,” the Queen Mother said. “Sthings are
better said by me.”
Seeing that the King was still frowning, the queen Dowager smiled. “Your Majesty, loyal officials are important,
but the court needs more than just loyalty. It’s like a grand stage, different people must play their roles,
balancing and competing with each other to make it work. Greed isn’t the real problem; the real problem is not
being able to control the greedy ones. As long as they're not harming the people, why worry?
If they don’t, Let them know you see everything. For now, they can keep their heads, but they must be’ they'll
lose everything. Remember this. Sometimes, people with flaws are the easiest to control.”
Oliver listened from the side, and his earlier thoughts disappeared. Killing them was truly not the best solution.
Using them wisely was.
Hearing the Queen Mother's words, the King finally calmed down. “Then | won't attend court tomorrow.”
